Meta has said it has agreed to acquire Moltbook, a social media platform designed for AI agents. Meta confirmed to Forbes that it will join Meta’s “Superintelligence” unit as part of the deal.

Meta’s vice president of AI products said in an internal post obtained by Axios that existing Moltbook users will still have access to the platform, though Meta suggested this may change.

Moltbook creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join the Meta Superintelligence Lab. Axios reported that the deal is expected to close in March.

The social media platform for AI Agents claims to have 2.8 million AI agents registered as of Tuesday, with nearly 200,000 verified by their “human owners.”

Schlicht said he didn’t write a single line of code when developing Moltbook and built the platform using AI, which he said “made it a reality.”

Meta and other global technology giants have ramped up spending as AI market competition intensifies. Meta said it expected capital expenditures of up to $135 billion in 2026, nearly double the $72 billion it spent in 2025.

The technology firm has made ample investments in the AI market. For instance, it invested $14 billion in  Scale AI, and its founder, Alexandr Wang, joined Meta.

Meta also acquired Manus, another AI startup whose AI agent produces research reports and builds websites, in December for $2 billion.
