Meta Platforms plans to soon offer users in the United Kingdom the option to subscribe to versions of Facebook and Instagram that are free of advertisements, addressing increasing user and regulatory concerns regarding privacy.
The subscriptions will cost £2.99 per month via the web and £3.99 on iOS and Android. Subscribers will no longer see adverts, and their personal data will not be used for targeted advertising.
The rollout follows similar changes across the European Union, where authorities have tightened rules on data use and advertising.
The UK’s data protection regulator has also expressed concerns over how social media companies handle personal information, increasing pressure on the tech giant.

Meta said the ad-free option is designed to give users more control over their online experience, while still offering free, ad-supported services to those who prefer them.
Advertising accounted for roughly 98% of Meta’s $164.5 billion revenue last year, meaning balancing regulatory compliance with the needs of its core business remains a key challenge.
