A pivotal trial began in state court on Monday as a 20-year-old woman, identified as KGM, sued Meta and YouTube, alleging their platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive.
This landmark case is the first of approximately 1,500 lawsuits to reach trial, potentially exposing tech giants to billions in damages and forced design overhauls.
KGM’s legal team argues that features like “infinite scroll” and constant notifications fuelled her anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal ideation starting as young as age six.

In response, defence attorneys for Meta and YouTube contend that KGM’s mental health struggles stemmed from a “difficult family life” rather than screen time.
High-profile executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, are expected to testify as the jury weighs corporate accountability versus parental responsibility.
