Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence in reaching a water-sharing agreement with US President Donald Trump, despite his recent threat of a new five per cent tariff on Mexican goods.
Trump accused Mexico of violating the 1944 water treaty, claiming the country owed the US 800,000 acre-feet of water from the Rio Grande and demanding a quarter of that amount be released by December 31.
Sheinbaum acknowledged that Mexico is behind on its water deliveries due to severe drought conditions in 2022 and 2023.

However, she noted that meeting Trump’s December 31 deadline is physically impossible due to limitations with the available pumping equipment.
She affirmed Mexico’s “best will” to deliver the amount of water owed from previous years and confirmed officials were meeting with US counterparts to discuss the matter.
Trump’s pressure on Mexico coincided with his announcement of a $12 billion aid package for the US agriculture sector.
