Mexico has confirmed that soldiers killed Nemesio Oseguera, the 59-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a clash in the town of Tapalpa.
Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho”, died while being transported to Mexico City, the army said in a statement on Sunday.
Oseguera, one of Mexico’s most wanted drug suspects with a $15 million bounty, was targeted in an operation that combined Mexican military intelligence with information from US authorities.
Six suspected cartel gunmen were killed during the operation, three soldiers were wounded, and two cartel suspects were arrested.
Authorities also seized a variety of weapons, including rocket launchers capable of destroying armoured vehicles and aircraft.

Earlier in Jalisco, cartel members reportedly set vehicles on fire to block roads, a common tactic to delay security forces.
The violence spread to neighbouring Michoacan, where the CJNG also operates.
Formed in 2009, the CJNG has become one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking organisations.
The United States has designated it as a terrorist organisation and accuses it of sending cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the country.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau called Oseguera “one of the bloodiest and most ruthless drug kingpins.”
“This is a great development for Mexico, the US, Latin America, and the world. The good guys are stronger than the bad guys,” he added.
