Mexico’s President Hits Back at Trump’s Remarks

Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticised Donald Trump’s vow to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” suggesting instead that the United States be called “Mexican America.”

At her morning press conference, Sheinbaum displayed a 17th-century map depicting North America as “Mexican America” and quipped, “It sounds nice, doesn’t it?” She noted that the Gulf of Mexico is the name recognised by the United Nations.

Sheinbaum assured she aimed for “good relations” with Trump, who will begin his second term on January 20, but pushed back against his claim that Mexico is run by drug cartels, asserting, “In Mexico, the people rule.”

Trump, meanwhile, has renewed threats to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups and impose tariffs unless Mexico curtails illegal migration and drug trafficking.
