Global technology giant Microsoft announced a $17.5 billion investment in India over the next four years to build the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
CEO Satya Nadella confirmed this is the company’s largest-ever investment in Asia, made following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The investment prioritises developing “secure, sovereign-ready hyperscale infrastructure” to boost AI adoption.

A key project is the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, which is scheduled to go live in mid-2026. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the commitment, stating that the world is “optimistic about India” regarding AI.
This announcement is part of a broader trend of major global tech companies focusing on India—the world’s most populous country—with Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI also announcing significant investments or expansions in the region.
However, this tech surge coincides with increasing concern over tightening digital regulations being drafted by Indian authorities.
