Nvidia and Microsoft announced on Tuesday that they are jointly investing $15 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, as enthusiasm for AI continues to surge despite growing concerns on Wall Street about a possible tech bubble. Nvidia has committed up to $10 billion, while Microsoft — which already holds a 27 per cent stake in OpenAI, Anthropic’s major competitor — has pledged up to $5 billion.
The investment is part of a broader agreement under which Anthropic will purchase $30 billion worth of cloud computing capacity from Microsoft and adopt Nvidia’s latest chip technology. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella, speaking in an online announcement, said the partnership reflects a mutually beneficial relationship, explaining that Microsoft will use Anthropic’s models while Anthropic will rely on Microsoft’s infrastructure as both companies work together to help clients harness the benefits of AI.
This substantial funding signals a major shift in the generative AI landscape, where competition is escalating not only between OpenAI and Anthropic but also with Google, which unveiled its newest Gemini model on Tuesday. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, the California-based Anthropic markets itself as a company focused on safety in AI development, with the Claude range of chatbots and models as its core offering.
Despite the excitement surrounding the investment, concerns about an AI market bubble weighed on tech stocks. Nvidia, currently the world’s most valuable company by market capitalisation, saw its shares fall by up to three per cent, while Microsoft’s stock dropped nearly 3.5 per cent during a wider sell-off across the technology sector.
CNBC reported, citing unnamed sources, that the new investment round values Anthropic at around $350 billion, placing it among the most valuable companies globally. OpenAI, by comparison, was most recently valued at about $500 billion.
