Aleksandr Golovin netted the decisive goal in a thrilling match as Monaco edged Rennes 3-2 in Ligue 1 on Saturday, strengthening their Champions League aspirations while leaving their opponents in deep trouble.
Maghnes Akliouche dazzled the sparse crowd at Stade Louis II with an extraordinary overhead kick to open the scoring after 15 minutes. Golovin nearly doubled the lead shortly after but struck the crossbar instead, leaving Monaco to rue the missed chance as Mahamadou Nagida levelled for Rennes in first-half stoppage time.
Early in the second half, Danish forward Mika Biereth restored Monaco’s lead, marking his first goal for the club since joining from Sturm Graz earlier this month. Moments later, Akliouche set up Golovin, who made it 3-1 in the 56th minute.
However, the hosts were forced to defend resolutely after Amine Gouiri pulled one back for Rennes, ensuring a nervy finish. The victory lifts Monaco to third in Ligue 1, just days after they sealed a Champions League knockout spot with a win over Aston Villa.
For Rennes, the loss extends their dismal start to 2025, with five defeats in five matches across all competitions. The side has now suffered seven losses in 10 outings under Jorge Sampaoli, who took charge in November to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Later on Saturday, Lille face Strasbourg with the chance to reclaim third place, while league leaders Paris Saint-Germain host Reims. PSG’s new signing, Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, could make his debut following his €70 million transfer from Napoli.
