Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were dealt a surprise blow on Saturday as they slipped to a 1–0 defeat away to Monaco, although they clung on to top spot in Ligue 1 after Marseille were held to a dramatic 2–2 draw at home by Toulouse.

Monaco’s Takumi Minamino produced the decisive moment in the second half, the Japanese international striking to hand the champions their second league defeat of the season.

Despite being reduced to 10 men late on after former PSG defender Thilo Kehrer was dismissed, the hosts defended doggedly to secure a much-needed victory in front of their home supporters.

The result lifted Monaco provisionally to sixth place, ending a run of three consecutive league defeats that had stalled their campaign. They now sit seven points behind PSG, whose previous domestic loss this season also came on the road, against Marseille in September.

For PSG, it was another frustrating night in a season that has not always lived up to expectations.

Luis Enrique’s side, again missing several key players, struggled to impose themselves and rarely threatened to break Monaco’s resistance.

PSG remain top of the table with 30 points from 14 matches, but their lead has been trimmed to a single point after Marseille failed to capitalise.

Roberto De Zerbi’s men were left to rue a late lapse in concentration as Toulouse pegged them back at the Velodrome.

Lens could now leapfrog both sides to go top if they beat Angers away on Sunday, with the title race tightening at the summit.

Luis Enrique did not hide his disappointment afterwards, admitting it was the poorest display of PSG’s season and conceding his team made too many errors across the pitch.

Monaco had taken the lead when Minamino controlled a cross from Aleksandr Golovin before steering the ball past goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Even after Kehrer was sent off following a VAR review for a foul on Ibrahim Mbaye, the home side held firm through seven minutes of stoppage time.

Paul Pogba made another brief appearance from the bench for Monaco, continuing his return to action after serving a lengthy doping ban.

Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli said the victory was timely and hailed his side for ending their poor run with a result against one of Europe’s elite teams.

Marseille, meanwhile, looked set to go top after fighting back against Toulouse, only to be denied by a late equaliser from substitute Santiago Hidalgo.

The visitors had gone ahead just before half-time after Brazilian forward Emersonn surged forward and finished calmly. Marseille responded after the break, with Igor Paixao levelling after rounding the goalkeeper, before Pierre-Emile

Hojbjerg headed home from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cross to put the hosts in front.

But their celebrations were short-lived. Deep into stoppage time, Hidalgo rose to meet a long throw-in and sent a header past the goalkeeper to snatch a point for Toulouse and shatter Marseille’s hopes of climbing to the top of the table.
