South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, has stated that Morocco remains the host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), dismissing claims that his country has been confirmed as the new host.

In a statement issued on Monday, Mr McKenzie said that South Africa has only indicated its readiness to support the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if the need arises, stressing that no formal request or decision has been made.

“At this stage, no formal decision has been taken to relocate the tournament, and Morocco remains the official designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. CAF has not activated any alternative hosting process,” the statement said.

He added that any such preparations form part of CAF’s standard contingency planning for major tournaments.

According to the minister, CAF has not activated any alternative hosting process and has not relocated the tournament.

Mr McKenzie said South Africa would require several approvals before hosting the event, including clearance from the cabinet, CAF’s formal endorsement, and confirmation that venues are ready.

Morocco will host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for a third consecutive time, with the tournament scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3.

The North African country finished as runners-up in the last two editions, losing to South Africa in the 2022 final and to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in 2024.
