Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has accepted an invitation from US President Donald Trump to serve as a founding member of a new US-backed “Board of Peace”, the Moroccan foreign ministry said on Monday.

The ministry, in a statement carried by the MAP news agency, said the monarch welcomed “Trump’s commitment and vision to promoting peace,” and “has graciously accepted this invitation”.

It added that Morocco would “ratify the charter establishing this board”.

According to the ministry, the US-led body aims to “contribute to peace efforts in the Middle East and adopt a new approach to resolving conflicts around the world”.

Although the board’s original purpose was to supervise Gaza’s reconstruction, its charter does not limit its authority to the Palestinian territory.

The charter, seen by AFP, states that participating countries would be represented by their head of state or government and could serve for an initial three-year term, extendable for those contributing more than $1 billion within the first year.

The White House has invited several world leaders to join the board, which would be chaired by Trump.

Those approached include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
