Mozambique’s Ruling Party Appoints Chapo as New Leader

Mozambique’s governing Frelimo party has appointed a regional governor, Daniel Chapo, as its new leader, ahead of national elections scheduled for October 9.

Chapo’s nomination follows intense debates within the party over the weekend, which saw his closest rival drop out from the race. This places Chapo as a likely flagbearer to take over from President Filipe Nyusi in October.
