South African cricketer Wiaan Mulder declared his innings at an unbeaten 367 runs against Zimbabwe, just 33 runs shy of Brian Lara’s world Test record, stating his decision was out of respect for the West Indies legend.

Mulder’s score is a new South African record and the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket history.

The South African captain, who resumed on 264 not out, reached his triple century off 297 balls, making it the second-fastest by a South African, behind Virender Sehwag.

He surpassed Hashim Amla’s previous South African record of 311 not out before declaring at lunch on the second day.

“Let the Legend Keep the Record”

“Brian Lara is a legend. He got 401 or whatever it was against England. For someone of that stature to keep the record is pretty special,” Mulder said after the day’s play, adding that he’d make the same decision again.

He consulted with coach Shukri Conrad, who supported his choice, saying, “Let the legend keep the record.”

South Africa’s formidable total of 626 for five proved too much for Zimbabwe, who were bowled out for 170 in their first innings and reached 51 for one after being forced to follow on.

Mulder also contributed with the ball, taking two wickets and a catch.

Sean Williams was Zimbabwe’s lone standout performer, smashing an unbeaten 83 off 55 balls.
