One person has died following multiple accidents on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning, causing gridlock that has left commuters and motorists stranded.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the main crash involved a collision between two heavy-duty trailers, one carrying sand and the other granite. The agency said the collision was reportedly caused by a reckless contest for the right of way.

LASTMA said the driver of the sand-laden truck was trapped and sustained fatal injuries. He was extricated by rescue teams, transferred to personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and later pronounced dead at the General Hospital, Ikeja. The driver of the second truck was rescued unhurt.

The Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad reported that a secondary accident occurred as a result of the overturned truck, which spilt its cargo across nearly the entire carriageway, further worsening traffic.

Security operatives and emergency responders were deployed to manage crowd control, assist in rescue operations, and implement traffic diversion measures.

“Two serious accidents have occurred at Otedola Bridge, inward Lagos. In the first incident, a fully loaded truck overturned, spilling its consignments onto the road and covering about 90 per cent of the carriageway.

“The second accident occurred directly behind the first crash, compounding traffic disruption in the area.Emergency responders have been alerted. Motorists are advised to drive with caution around the area.”

The Otedola Bridge has been the scene of repeated accidents in recent months. On January 18, two commuters died in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Kara Bridge section, while six people, including a police officer, were killed in a crash involving multiple trucks, including a fuel tanker, on October 30, 2025.
