Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has offered to fund the salaries of U.S. airport security personnel as a federal funding standoff continues to paralyse the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
With Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees working without pay since mid-February, Musk announced on X that he is willing to cover payroll to alleviate the “negative impact” on both the workers and American travellers.
I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country

The move comes as the agency’s 65,000-strong workforce faces an annual payroll estimated between $2.5 billion and $3 billion.

The financial crisis stems from a bitter political dispute in Congress, where Democrats have blocked DHS funding in protest of current immigration enforcement tactics.
Lawmakers are demanding significant reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including a ban on agents wearing face masks during raids and a requirement for judicial warrants before entering private property.
These demands intensified following the January deaths of two demonstrators during an aggressive ICE operation in Minneapolis, an event that led to the firing of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The prolonged lapse in funding has already triggered a wave of resignations, with over 300 TSA officers leaving the agency since February 14.
Those remaining have seen unscheduled absences more than double, leading to significantly longer security lines at major hubs.
While some officers have resorted to second jobs or food pantries to survive, Musk’s high-profile offer adds a new layer of complexity to the debate over federal responsibility and private intervention in national security.
