Nigeria’s food and drug regulator has uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks factory in the southeastern city of Aba in Abia State, it said on Monday, seizing equipment and materials valued at more than 500 million naira.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said the facility at 25 Omenazu Street was operating in unhygienic conditions.
The suspected operator fled on the team’s arrival, abandoning a vehicle containing packaging materials bearing the names Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky, empty bottles and a drum holding about 200 litres of liquid, according to NAFDAC.

Officials found packaging materials, bottle caps, sealing machines, empty bottles, cartons, tanks containing liquid concoctions and dirty sieves allegedly used in production, NAFDAC said in a post on X.
“Plastic buckets and 200-litre drums containing ethanol and tree bark immersed in ethanol were also discovered, raising serious concerns about the safety and quality of the products being produced,” NAFDAC said.
The agency said it acted on credible intelligence and estimated the value of the equipment, materials and facility components at over 500 million naira.
NAFDAC urged the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing to its call centre on 0800-1-62332.
