The Nigerian Navy says it has intercepted about 44,000 litres of illegally refined fuel and arrested eight suspects during an operation in Rivers State.
Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was carried out by personnel under Operation Delta Sentinel in Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo areas.
He explained that the raid followed credible intelligence of illegal refining activities in the region, prompting the deployment of a patrol team from Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder.
Folorunsho said the team intercepted two wooden boats loaded with large quantities of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
He stated that eight suspects were arrested during the operation, while other armed accomplices fled on sighting the naval team.
“Acting on credible intelligence about illicit activities in the area, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder deployed an Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team.
“This led to the interception of two wooden boats carrying approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
“The operation also resulted in the arrest of eight suspects linked to the illegal activity, while additional armed accomplices fled upon sighting the naval patrol team.”
He added that the suspects and seized products are in custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy said the operation was in line with directives from the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, to intensify the crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal bunkering.
Folorunsho said the service would continue intelligence-led operations and coordinated patrols to curb maritime crimes and protect Nigeria’s economic assets.
