Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has officially been named the new Super Eagles captain ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This was announced in a post on the Super Eagles’ handle on X( formerly Twitter) on Friday.
“Wilfred Ndidi has been named captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco,” the post read.
During an interview with the team’s media, Ndidi revealed that he has consulted with senior squad members about his new role and requested the continued support of all staff to ensure a seamless transition
“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” the former Leicester City player told the Super Eagles media team.
“ I’ve had a conversation with a couple of players, just some of the older players. You know, just try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. Also, you need the support from the staff. We’re all in this together,” Ndidi said.

The defensive midfielder takes over as captain following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the two erstwhile captains of the senior men’s national team.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup following the continental playoffs loss, but Ndidi believes the AFCON tournament is another opportunity at redemption.
“It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity. Another day, another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud once again.
“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it. We look forward to enjoying it together.”
Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles as the new captain in their first group match against Tanzania on December 23.
