Nduli Fires Stellenbosch to Shock Victory Over Zamalek in Confederation Cup

Sihle Nduli scored a dramatic late winner to hand South African side Stellenbosch a remarkable 1-0 triumph over Egyptian giants Zamalek on Wednesday, booking their place in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals.

The 29-year-old midfielder netted in the 79th minute in Cairo, latching onto a cutback to blast a close-range effort past goalkeeper Mohamed Awad. It was Nduli’s first goal in the competition and the decisive moment in the tie, after the first leg had ended goalless in Cape Town.

With the narrow 1-0 aggregate victory, Stellenbosch—competing in continental football for the first time—now prepare to face Tanzania’s Simba SC in the semi-finals later this month.

Elsewhere, Moroccan outfit Renaissance Berkane secured a 2-0 aggregate win over ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast, with Oussama Lamlioui finishing smartly from a Paul Bassene back-heel in their 1-0 second-leg victory.

In an all-Algerian affair, CS Constantine caused a major upset by knocking out reigning champions USM Alger. After another 1-1 draw in the second leg left the tie at 2-2 on aggregate, Constantine held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties and advance to face Berkane in the last four.

USM Alger had taken the lead in Algiers through an Adam Alilet penalty, only for Abdennour Belhocini to level for Constantine with a powerful header in the second half.

Back in Cairo, Zamalek—winners of 13 CAF titles—were widely tipped to end Stellenbosch’s fairytale run. But the South Africans stood firm defensively, and Moroccan striker Seifeddine Jaziri wasted the home side’s best two opportunities.

Following Nduli’s breakthrough, Zamalek looked out of ideas and failed to muster the two goals they needed to advance under the away goals rule.

The loss heaps further pressure on Portuguese coach José Peseiro, the club’s third manager this season. Peseiro notably left out fan favourite Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed amid speculation of a possible move to rivals Al Ahly. “I haven’t signed with any club, in Egypt or abroad,” Zizo wrote on Facebook. “If someone has my signature, let them show it.”

Simba SC completed the semi-final line-up after overcoming Egyptian side Al Masry in a dramatic penalty shootout in Dar es Salaam. The Tanzanian side won the second leg 2-0 to level the tie at 2-2 before triumphing 4-1 on penalties.

Guinean goalkeeper Moussa Camara redeemed himself after a shaky first leg, saving two of the three penalties he faced. Defender Shomari Kapombe then slotted the decisive spot kick to send Simba into their first Confederation Cup semi-final after seven attempts.

Goals from Elie Mpanzu and Steven Mukwala in the first half had wiped out Masry’s first-leg advantage, setting up the tense finale.
