The election interference case against President Donald Trump in Georgia has a new prosecutor, Peter Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia.

Skandalakis announced on Friday that he was taking over the high-profile racketeering case, stepping in just ahead of a deadline set by Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.

Had a replacement not been found by the deadline, the case risked dismissal.

Skandalakis stressed that he took the case to ensure it is “handled properly, fairly, and with full transparency.”

The change in leadership follows the disqualification of former Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis by a Georgia appeals court in December.

Willis was removed due to the “impropriety” of an intimate relationship she had with the special prosecutor she had hired.

The case, originally filed in 2023, charges Trump and 18 co-defendants with allegedly conspiring to subvert the state’s 2020 election results. Four of the indicted allies have since pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

While the state charges against Trump and his remaining co-defendants remain active, he is unlikely to stand trial while serving as president.

Additionally, Trump’s recent pardons for allies like Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows only apply to federal offences, meaning the state charges in Georgia will continue to move forward.
