NIDCOM Urges Calm Over Ghana Deportation Row

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has appealed for calm following the circulation of a video showing a protest in Ghana where some locals called for the deportation of Nigerians.

The protesters alleged that Nigerians in Ghana were exhibiting behaviours not in line with local norms.

Reacting to the video, Dabiri-Erewa condemned the generalisation and stigmatisation of Nigerians, saying, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves, while those who err should be held individually accountable.”

She emphasised the historical and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana, describing both countries as “Siamese twins” with a shared commitment to ECOWAS principles and peaceful regional integration.

She urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid any form of violence and clarified that, contrary to some viral social media claims, there is no verified evidence of Nigerian-owned shops or properties being attacked.

The issue, she noted, is being addressed at the diplomatic level by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, in collaboration with Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners.

She also warned against the use of inciteful language by individuals on either side, as such rhetoric could further inflame tensions.
