Niger’s security forces say they have killed 17 suspected militants and arrested 33 others in a sweeping nationwide crackdown targeting terrorism and organised crime.

According to the Integrated Operations Coordination Centre (CICO), the operations carried out between February 16 and 22 under the code names Niya, Damissa, and Garkouwa also led to the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, explosives, and illicit goods.

The agency said troops conducted coordinated missions across multiple regions, during which the suspects were neutralised and dozens of alleged criminals and accomplices taken into custody.

Authorities reported that the raids yielded 1,098 sticks of dynamite, 48 kilograms of cannabis, about 23,250 litres of smuggled fuel, and large quantities of illicit pharmaceutical tablets.

CICO noted that the seizures dealt a blow to the financial and supply networks sustaining criminal groups, adding that security forces remain committed to maintaining operational pressure nationwide.

The statement also confirmed three improvised explosive device (IED) incidents were reported. Bomb disposal units successfully defused two devices, while a third detonated without causing casualties, leaving only minor damage to a military vehicle.

Details of the operations show that under Operation Niya, troops were deployed to Sirem-Tondikoire village following reports of armed elements. A subsequent sweep led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, loaded magazines, communication equipment, and other items abandoned by fleeing suspects. Stolen livestock was also recovered and returned to residents.

In a separate patrol on February 22 in the Ouro Gueladjo area, forces identified and neutralised a suspected lookout, which authorities said confirmed the presence of a hostile observation post.

Under Operation Damissa, multiple enforcement actions were carried out. A cordon-and-search operation at Boumba market led to the seizure of a large boat transporting 19 smaller vessels, along with locally made weapons and ammunition.

At the Tombo Mouza border post, security forces engaged armed motorcycle riders. Officials said one motorcycle was destroyed during the encounter, while a rifle and ammunition were set ablaze. The suspects reportedly fled across the border into Nigeria.

Elsewhere, troops on a night patrol near Horou Boule responded to intelligence on a hostile presence, locating and killing an armed individual while recovering his weapon.

Meanwhile, under Operation Garkouwa, authorities intercepted a vehicle travelling from Amzeguer to Dirkou after firing warning shots. The vehicle was found carrying nearly 4,000 litres of smuggled fuel in jerrycans. Three suspects were arrested, and fuel, cash, and other items were seized.

CICO reiterated that defence and security forces remain determined to sustain operations and urged citizens to cooperate with authorities to enhance national security.

“The Defence and Security Forces reaffirm their determination to continue operations and call on the population to actively collaborate to strengthen security and preserve peace in our country.”

Niger continues to face persistent insecurity driven by armed groups, cross-border trafficking, and organised criminal networks.
