Nigeria and Algeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen parliamentary cooperation and strengthen legislative relations between both nations.

The agreement was formalised during a meeting between Nigeria’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the President of the Algerian National People’s Assembly, Ibrahim Boughali, in Algiers. The MoU aims to promote mutual understanding, capacity building, and regular exchanges between the two countries’ legislative institutions.

In his remarks, Speaker Abbas highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing regional integration and fostering stronger bilateral relations. He explained that the agreement would enable both countries to share best practices in law-making, oversight, and representation while also promoting dialogue on issues of mutual interest such as trade, education, and security.

“The legislature is not only a law-making body but also a platform for international cooperation and people-to-people engagement,” he said. “Through this partnership, Nigeria and Algeria can work together to address common challenges and strengthen democratic governance across Africa.”

Abbas also expressed appreciation for Algeria’s support for Nigeria’s democratic development and reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to implementing the terms of the agreement in ways that benefit both nations.

On his part, Speaker Ibrahim Boughali welcomed the Nigerian delegation and noted that the partnership would enhance friendship and solidarity between the two countries. He called for greater collaboration in youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and regional peacebuilding efforts.

Both sides agreed to establish a joint parliamentary committee to oversee the implementation of the MoU and to facilitate regular consultations on policy and legislative priorities.

The visit concluded with renewed assurances of cooperation and a shared commitment to promoting unity, prosperity, and stability across the African continent.
