Nigeria’s National Economic Council (NEC) endorsed a 90-day economic action plan on Thursday to reduce the cost of living, improve food affordability, and accelerate high-impact projects, the presidency said.

The plan, proposed by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele at the council’s 161st meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, identified five priority areas: food affordability, tax harmonisation, completion of high-impact projects, resolving investment bottlenecks, and regulated household support.

NEC also approved a national dashboard to track projects, with emphasis on transparency and the use of fuel subsidy removal proceeds.

Oyedele said the administration aims to reduce headline inflation and interest rates to single digits by 2027.

Shettima charged state governors to ensure the reforms translate into affordable transportation, healthcare, and jobs.

“The first dividend of prosperity should be the confidence to plan a life. Our task is to make such confidence less dependent on fortune,” Shettima said.

He stressed the need for cooperation across federal and state jurisdictions.

“Our separate jurisdictions must serve a common public interest,” he said.

“Our separate mandates must not become competing excuses. Each Governor carries knowledge that no federal document can supply.”

On the National Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Bus Initiative, the vice president said success should be measured by affordability rather than fleet size.

“The cost of reaching a livelihood should never consume the livelihood itself. The passenger’s experience must guide our ambition, because the value of public transport resides in the journeys it makes possible. We should assess success through affordability and access, rather than fleet size alone,” he said.

The council received an update on the Ebola outbreak from Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate, who assured members of the country’s capacity to contain the situation.

He noted that 21 states had updated their response plans and urged the remaining 15 to expedite preparations.

On polio, the council directed states to conduct post-campaign reviews, particularly in areas where children were missed and communities affected by insecurity.

It also resolved to strengthen federal-state collaboration to unlock the livestock sector’s economic potential.

Also, the council approved a joint federal-state financing framework to accelerate the deployment of CNG and electric vehicles, directing that savings be passed on to commuters through lower fares.
