The Nigerian Government has expressed sympathy with the governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe over the loss of lives caused by recent devastating floods.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the affected countries for the human and material losses they suffered. The ministry also raised concerns about secondary humanitarian impacts, including food insecurity, disease outbreaks and increased risks faced by women, children and other vulnerable groups.
Nigeria affirmed its solidarity with ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief operations led by national authorities, regional bodies and international humanitarian partners. The government commended the resilience of the affected countries as they respond to the disaster and begin recovery and reconstruction efforts.
The Nigerian Government further warned of the growing threat of climate-related extreme weather across Africa, stressing the need for stronger regional cooperation, effective early warning systems, climate adaptation measures, and sustained international support.
Nigeria assured the affected nations of its continued goodwill and support, reaffirming its commitment to bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation on disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and climate resilience. It added that the thoughts and prayers of the Nigerian people remain with all those affected during this difficult time.
South Africa has since declared a national disaster after widespread flooding destroyed homes and killed dozens, forcing thousands to seek shelter, including in neighbouring Mozambique.
Reports indicate that the floods have claimed more than 100 lives across Southern Africa, displaced large populations, damaged infrastructure, disrupted agriculture and cut off entire communities, with weather agencies warning of further severe conditions.
