The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Pretoria has issued an urgent security advisory following violent protests in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.
The statement, released on Monday, March 30, 2026, warns of “palpable tension” in the region after a march against a self-styled “Nigerian King” escalated into civil unrest.
Reports indicate that several properties and vehicles were targeted during the demonstrations, prompting the mission to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of its nationals.
In a detailed 10-point advisory, the High Commission urged Nigerians living in South Africa to exercise extreme caution and maintain a low profile.
The statement explicitly advises against engaging in any form of socio-cultural activity or making inflammatory statements on social media that could further aggravate the situation.
Citizens are also encouraged to avoid areas where large crowds are gathering and to refrain from any counter-protests that might lead to physical confrontations.
The mission has instructed its citizens to report any immediate threats to life or property to the local police and to stay in close contact with the High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg.
While the South African government works to restore order in the affected areas, the Nigerian diplomatic mission remains on high alert, emphasising that the personal safety of its community is currently the highest priority during this period of heightened volatility.
