Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for collective effort and national unity as essential drivers of lasting progress.

Speaking at a World Press Conference in Abuja to mark the country’s 65th independence anniversary, Idris said the celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey and to rally citizens around a shared vision for the future.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as “courageous and visionary reforms” under the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting its eight priority areas as the foundation for prosperity, peace and unity.

“This 65th Anniversary is themed ‘All Hands On Deck’—a heartfelt call for Nigerians and partners around the world to support these landmark reforms,” he said.

Idris pointed to signs of economic improvement, citing a growing trade surplus, stronger currency, declining inflation and food prices, and rising external reserves. From January 2026, the government will implement a new set of tax laws to expand revenue while simplifying collection and easing the burden on citizens.

He hinted that increased funds are already being channelled into health, education, infrastructure, agriculture, energy security, small businesses, youth programmes, and national security.

The minister also highlighted major infrastructure and energy initiatives, including a nationwide road and transport revolution with projects such as the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and the 750-kilometre Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

He noted steady growth in oil production, record lows in gas flaring, and new multi-billion-dollar investments in deepwater exploration and gas distribution. Solid minerals are likewise attracting investors, with lithium plants in the FCT and Nasarawa boosting government royalties.

Idris said the Presidential Metering Initiative will deliver seven million smart metres by 2027, while the Kaduna Power Plant and Siemens-backed Presidential Power Initiative continue to advance.

He described these projects as proof that Nigeria is “gradually recapturing the spirit of people-centred, grassroots development,” reinforced by new regional development commissions and a dedicated federal ministry.

The 65th Independence Anniversary, themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” urges all citizens to uphold hope, unity and patriotism as the country strives for a stronger and more inclusive future.
