* Nigeria Moves to Establish Direct Air Route with Brazil

As part of President Bola Tinubu’s mandate to establish a direct flight link between Nigeria and South America, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has embarked on a strategic working visit to Brazil.

Arriving in Brazil on 5 May, the minister was accompanied by Captain Chris Najomo, the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), along with representatives of several Nigerian airline operators. This visit marks a pivotal step in strengthening Nigeria’s air transport links and bolstering its aviation sector.

A statement released by the minister’s special adviser on media and communications, Tunde Moshood, confirmed the minister’s engagements, highlighting a key meeting with aircraft manufacturing giant Embraer at its headquarters in São José dos Campos, in São Paulo State. Embraer, globally respected for its expertise in regional aircraft production, is collaborating with the Nigerian delegation to explore opportunities for supplying modern aircraft, offering favourable leasing arrangements, and connecting Nigerian operators with reputable financiers.

“We had extensive discussions with Embraer on how they can support our aviation sector with their vast network of lessors and financial institutions. The goal is to empower Nigerian operators with the tools and partnerships necessary for growth and expansion,” the minister said.

Following the São Paulo leg, the minister will continue to Brasilia, where he is scheduled to meet Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho. One of the main objectives of this engagement is to review and revise the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two nations. The aim is to pave the way for the prompt commencement of direct flights connecting Nigeria and Brazil.

This diplomatic mission is in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to enhance regional air connectivity, stimulate international commerce, and reinforce diplomatic and economic cooperation between Nigeria and South America.
