Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, has signalled his intention to run for president again in 2027 under the LP banner, potentially undermining efforts to form a broad opposition coalition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a video circulating on the LP’s WhatsApp platform, Obi told young supporters he would “continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
He also attributed the apparent internal crises within the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Nigerian government, asserting these are “deliberate problems caused by the system.”

Obi, who will be 65 by the 2027 election, also advocated for a retirement age for politicians.
He urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, not to be discouraged and to ensure their votes count, acknowledging that positive change often faces resistance from beneficiaries of the old order.
These remarks come amidst reports of a potential opposition coalition, possibly using the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, involving figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Obi’s declaration casts a shadow over the unity of such a proposed alliance.
