Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved contracts totalling N987 billion for significant upgrades to airports throughout the country.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, made this announcement after Thursday’s cabinet meeting, which President Bola Tinubu chaired at the State House in Abuja.
He clarified that these projects will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund.
“Today, it was the turn of aviation to receive the kind attention of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund,” he said.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu has made substantial infrastructure improvements in the aviation sector a priority across the nation. He emphasised that the main focus of these enhancements is the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernisation of International Terminal One at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to him, this project is entirely funded by the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund and has been assigned to CCECC, the same firm responsible for the construction of Terminal Two in Lagos.
As part of the expansion efforts, Terminal Two will receive upgrades that include a new apron, access roads, bridges, and associated infrastructure. The total expenditure for the rehabilitation of the airport facilities in Lagos amounts to N712.26 billion, with an estimated timeline for completion of 22 months.
In addition, the Federal Executive Council approved significant upgrades at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, which involve the refurbishment of both runways and taxiways.
Likewise, Port Harcourt International Airport will be undergoing improvements to its runway and taxiway, along with the installation of enhanced airfield lighting to meet Category 2 (CAT 2) standards. This N42.14 billion initiative aims to improve flight safety and operations in adverse weather conditions.
Keyamo also shared that the Federal Executive Council has approved the complete business case for a 30-year concession for Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
