The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has proposed that all drivers applying for licences in Nigeria undergo compulsory drug integrity tests as part of efforts to reduce road accidents linked to substance abuse.

NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, made this known in a goodwill message delivered at the National Summit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Special Marshals in Abuja on Wednesday.

Represented by Deputy Commandant General of Narcotics Umoru Ambrose, Marwa explained that research has consistently shown that drug use is a significant factor in road crashes across the country.

A key feature of the agreement will be the introduction of drug integrity tests for drivers before they can obtain licences.

According to Marwa, the NDLEA has already trained specialists who will equip FRSC officers to carry out on-the-spot drug checks during highway patrols.

Marwa stressed that the measure is designed to deter commercial drivers from using drugs or alcohol while on duty, noting that both drivers and passengers could be subjected to random tests during routine operations once the plan is implemented.

This initiative aligns with the Nigerian government’s wider anti-drug strategy, which also includes compulsory drug testing for university students and a new curriculum integrating drug education into Nigerian secondary schools.
