Nigeria has opened discussions with the Qatar Foundation to deepen collaboration in education, research, and human capital development, as part of its broader strategy to revitalise the country’s learning system and empower young people.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, disclosed this during a high-level engagement with officials of the Qatar Foundation in Doha. He said the Nigerian government is seeking strategic partnerships that will improve access to quality education, modern teaching infrastructure, and digital learning initiatives across the country.
Professor Mamman explained that the administration of President Bola Tinubu places education at the centre of its development priorities, especially as the nation pushes for inclusive growth through skills acquisition and innovation. “Education remains the foundation of national progress. We are determined to provide every Nigerian child, regardless of background, the opportunity to learn, compete, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
He emphasised that the partnership aims to strengthen Nigeria’s universities, vocational centres, and basic education institutions through scholarships, teacher training, curriculum reform, and joint research programmes.
The minister noted that the Qatar Foundation’s track record in supporting education and social development across Africa and the Middle East makes it a natural partner for Nigeria’s ambitions. He also commended Qatar’s investment in science and technology-driven education models that have transformed learning outcomes in several countries.
Officials from the Qatar Foundation expressed willingness to explore areas of mutual interest, including science and innovation, entrepreneurship education, and youth empowerment. They acknowledged Nigeria’s demographic strength and cultural diversity as key assets that could support future collaboration.
The proposed partnership will also focus on enhancing digital education platforms and establishing exchange programmes between Nigerian and Qatari institutions.
With over 10 million out-of-school children, Nigeria’s engagement with global partners such as Qatar Foundation represents an important step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on education and reducing inequality through access to learning opportunities.
