A Nigerian dietician registered in the United Kingdom has been removed from the professional register after a tribunal found she used artificial intelligence to answer questions during a remote job interview while in Nigeria.

A disciplinary panel of the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service ruled that Aiwanehi Aigbokhaevbo had relied on ChatGPT to generate responses during an online interview for an oncology dietician role at Royal Surrey County Hospital in the United Kingdom in March 2024.

The interview was conducted through Microsoft Teams because Aigbokhaevbo was in Nigeria at the time, according to Daily Mail report on Thursday.

According to the tribunal findings, she repeatedly asked the interview panel to repeat clinical questions and restated them before responding, behaviour the panel believed was intended to give her time to generate answers using AI.

Panel members also observed that her responses were unusually fluent and highly detailed, containing advanced medical terminology that appeared beyond the expected level for the role.

“The answers she provided were as if from a textbook, indicating specialist knowledge and experience of an advanced level,” the tribunal panel said.

They further noted that her eyes frequently moved from side to side during the interview, suggesting she was reading from another screen.

After the interview, Aigbokhaevbo was asked to complete a 45-minute written case study.

The panel concluded that the submission also appeared to have been generated using AI because of its unusually precise and comprehensive responses.

During the tribunal hearing, Aigbokhaevbo denied using artificial intelligence.

She said repeating questions was simply a way to confirm she understood them and explained that looking away from the screen was due to checking her internet connection.

However, the tribunal found her explanations inconsistent and determined that she had used AI to assist both during the interview and in completing the case study.

The panel also cited a lack of remorse and insight, stating that her conduct undermined the integrity of the recruitment process and could pose risks to patient care.

“Given the attitudinal nature of her misconduct, and the absence of any evidence of remorse, insight, or remediation, the Panel considered that there was a significant risk of repetition,” the ruling stated.

The tribunal found that her fitness to practise was impaired and ordered her removal from the UK dietician register.

An interim suspension of 18 months will remain in place while she retains the right to appeal the decision.
