Nigeria’s military authorities announced on Monday that several officers will face trial over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu last year, confirming a plan the government had previously denied.

Major General Samaila Uba, spokesman for the Defence Headquarters, said in a statement that investigations into the matter had been concluded.

He added that the findings had “identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” and that those implicated “will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial.”

16 officers were arrested over what the military described at the time as “acts of indiscipline.”

Sources within the government and armed forces had told AFP, however, that the arrests were linked to a coup attempt. If successful, the plot would have rolled back more than 25 years of democratic governance in the country.

No date has been set for the proceedings.
