The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the resignation in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Nnaji’s exit follows growing controversy over the authenticity of his academic qualifications and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. Although he claimed to have graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in 1975, the institution reportedly could not verify that he completed his degree.
A detailed two-year investigation by Premium Times alleged that Nnaji forged the credentials he submitted to President Tinubu and the Nigerian Senate during his ministerial screening. Since his nomination in July 2023, suspicions of certificate forgery have trailed his appointment.
Several sources insist that Nnaji never completed his university education and that both the bachelor’s degree and NYSC discharge certificate he presented to the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the State Security Service (SSS), and the Senate were falsified.
According to Premium Times, UNN Vice-Chancellor Simon Ortuanya confirmed that while Nnaji gained admission to the university in 1981, he did not finish his studies and was never awarded a degree. The NYSC also reportedly stated that the discharge certificate presented by Nnaji was unfamiliar and could not be verified.
President Tinubu has accepted Nnaji’s resignation amid the allegations.
