The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that recent reforms in the electricity sector will soon translate into improved power supply across the country.

In his Eid-el-Fitr message on Thursday, Adelabu said the government’s ongoing interventions are beginning to address persistent gas supply constraints that have hampered electricity generation.

“Concrete measures are being implemented to ensure more reliable and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and industries,” he said.

The power sector has faced challenges after gas suppliers halted deliveries to thermal plants due to an estimated ₦3.3 trillion debt owed by generation companies, leading to prolonged blackouts in many regions.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) indicated that thermal plants currently receive just 692 million standard cubic feet per day of gas, less than 43% of the required 1,629.75 mmscf for optimal output.

Adelabu expressed optimism that the ongoing government efforts will stabilise electricity supply and improve efficiency across the power value chain. He called on Nigerians to remain patient and supportive during the transition.

“The challenges we face today are, without doubt, the building blocks of a more prosperous tomorrow,” he said, urging citizens to sustain discipline and collective responsibility.

The minister also noted that Tinubu’s recent diplomatic engagements, including in the United Kingdom, are expected to attract investments into critical sectors such as power, strengthening infrastructure and service delivery.
