Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced a breakthrough in the nation’s aviation sector with the successful launch of Air Peace’s maiden flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport. This milestone follows months of high-level diplomatic engagement with the United Kingdom.
“After several months of diplomatic exchanges with my British counterpart, we finally secured the much-coveted Heathrow Airport slot for one of our flag carriers, Air Peace. Yesterday, we launched the maiden flight from Abuja to Heathrow with all the accompanying fanfare, both in Abuja and upon arrival at Heathrow.” Keyamo said in a post on his X platform on Monday.

The move marks a historic step in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen bilateral air travel links and position Air Peace as a competitive player on international routes long dominated by foreign carriers.
Aviation analysts have hailed the achievement as a sign of growing recognition for Nigerian carriers in global aviation, citing Heathrow’s notoriously strict slot allocation process as one of the world’s toughest.
Industry observers say the new route will not only improve travel convenience for Nigerians but could also reduce airfare costs on the popular Lagos–London and Abuja–London corridors, where foreign airlines have maintained a firm grip for years.
