The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a sharp fall in the average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across Nigeria, with significant drops recorded for both 5kg and 12.5kg cylinders in August 2025.
According to the NBS “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch” released on Thursday, the average cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder declined by 22.32 per cent month-on-month, sliding from N8,243.79 in July to N6,404.02 in August.
Yearly, this reflects a slight 0.40 per cent decrease from the N6,430.02 reported in August 2024.
The report also shows that the average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder dropped by 21.42 per cent, falling from N20,609.48 in July to N16,195.07 in August. Year-on-year, however, the 12.5kg price rose by 4.13 per cent compared with the N15,552.56 recorded in the same month last year.
Among the states, Katsina posted the highest average price for a 5kg refill at N6,945.21, closely followed by Taraba at N6,893.12 and Rivers at N6,886.49. Delta recorded the lowest at N5,657.50, with Bauchi and Borno trailing at N5,721.75 and N6,070.56, respectively. By regional analysis, the North-West led with an average of N6,473.63, followed by the North-East at N6,465.63, while the South-South had the lowest at N6,331.29.

For the 12.5 kg refill, Yobe registered the highest average at ₦16,887.42, followed by Adamawa at ₦16,872.40 and Ebonyi at ₦16,859.17. The lowest prices were found in Benue at ₦15,102.50, Borno at ₦15,176.39 and Imo at ₦15,177.58. Regionally, the North-West again recorded the highest average of ₦16,358.15, with the South-East next at ₦16,344.61 and the South-West lowest at ₦15,865.17.
This decline continues the downward trend seen in July, when the 5 kg refill price slipped 0.96 per cent from N8,323.95 in June to N8,243.79, and the 12.5 kg refill dropped 1.91 per cent from N21,010.56 to N20,609.48.
The NBS also highlighted that Nigeria’s headline inflation eased for the fifth straight month, falling to 20.12 per cent in August from 21.88 per cent in July, with food inflation standing at 21.87 per cent year-on-year, a considerable decline from the 37.52 per cent recorded in August 2024.
