Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, resigned on Monday, citing health grounds.

His departure comes immediately after President Bola Tinubu declared a “nationwide security emergency” last week in response to a surge in mass kidnappings, primarily targeting schoolchildren.

The security crisis, including the recent abduction of hundreds of people from a school, has put Nigeria under intense international scrutiny.

The country continues to struggle with both criminal gangs seeking ransom and a long-running terrorism insurgency.
