Nigeria’s Senate confirmed on Wednesday President Bola Tinubu’s appointees for the roles of service chiefs.
The confirmed individuals include Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.
In a letter to the upper chamber, Tinubu requested that the nominees be screened and confirmed. The Senate dedicated its Wednesday session to this process, holding a closed-door meeting that lasted more than two hours.
During this meeting, lawmakers questioned the nominees about their strategies to improve intelligence coordination, modernise military operations, and rebuild public trust in the armed forces.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio later called for a voice vote on their confirmation, which was approved unanimously by the chamber.

Following the confirmation, Akpabio praised the president for his selections, stating that the nominees have the necessary experience and credibility to transform the military.
“We congratulate President Bola Tinubu for making these choices, and also congratulate the Nigerian Senate for suspending every other item to go into this issue of screening, approval, and confirmation,” he said.
He noted that the approval of the nominees signifies renewed national confidence in the Tinubu administration’s security reforms and indicates that the government is committed to safeguarding the lives and property of its citizens.
Tinubu had appointed these new service chiefs on October 24, in light of reports about a foiled coup attempt. The Senate’s confirmation now formalises their appointments, which are expected to take effect immediately.
