NiMet Predicts Three Days of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting three consecutive days of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across several parts of the country. The agency warned residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions against potential flooding and related hazards.

In its latest weather outlook, NiMet stated that the storms are expected to begin on Tuesday, October 7, and will affect major cities and rural communities across the North-Central, South-West, and South-East regions, including parts of Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan, and Ilorin.

According to the agency, the heavy rainfall could cause disruptions to road travel, air traffic, and outdoor activities, while flash floods and overflowing drains could endanger lives and property in flood-prone zones.

“Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially those living near riverbanks and low-lying areas,” the statement read. “Motorists should also exercise caution, as visibility may be reduced during heavy downpours.”

NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, said the forecast aligns with ongoing seasonal trends, as the country enters the late rainy season marked by increased thunderstorm activity. He explained that while rainfall intensity may vary by location, some areas could experience up to 60mm of rain in 24 hours, a level capable of overwhelming drainage systems.

“We are closely monitoring the atmospheric conditions across all regions,” Anosike added. “Our stations and early warning systems are fully operational to provide real-time updates and ensure Nigerians remain informed.”

The agency also urged state governments and emergency services to prepare for potential flooding by clearing blocked drainages and sensitising communities on safety measures.

In recent weeks, several Nigerian states, including Kogi, Niger, and Anambra, have reported cases of flash floods that displaced hundreds of families and damaged farmlands. Experts have warned that poor drainage systems and unregulated urban development continue to worsen the effects of seasonal rainfall.

NiMet reiterated its commitment to continuous public awareness through its mobile app and media channels, advising citizens to follow daily updates and adhere to safety advisories.
