A devastating fire at an assisted living facility in Fall River on Sunday night has resulted in nine fatalities, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy,” expressing his condolences to the victims.

Footage from local media showed residents being evacuated on stretchers. In addition to the nine deaths, one person remains in critical condition, over 30 were hospitalised, and at least a dozen were rescued using ladders.

Five firefighters who sustained injuries while battling the blaze have since been released from the hospital.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation Underway

Firefighters responded to the Gabriel House shortly before 10:00 PM local time, encountering heavy smoke and flames with occupants trapped inside.

Approximately 70 people resided at the facility, and around 50 firefighters were mobilised to control the blaze. The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey extended her deepest condolences, calling it “the most horrific news imaginable.”

She emphasised the strength and resilience of the Fall River community, urging unity in the wake of the tragedy.
