At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed on Sunday when their convoy hit a landmine and came under gunfire in Borno State, according to two security sources.

The attack occurred near Bindundul village, about 20 kilometres from Kareto, as the soldiers travelled from Maiduguri to Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area.

Abba Kaka Tuja, a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force who took part in the rescue operation, said the convoy drove over an improvised explosive device planted on the road.

“The terrorists planted a mine that our soldiers stepped on. Unfortunately, about nine soldiers died instantly, while five others were seriously injured,” Tuja said.

He added that one armoured vehicle was destroyed by the blast, after which the troops came under sporadic gunfire from the attackers.

The incident happened at about 16:00 GMT, Tuja said.

Military authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the attack.
