The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is threatening a nationwide protest, citing the escalating insecurity, widespread poverty, and the crushing cost-of-living crisis. The NLC declared that Nigerian workers will not stand by as the nation’s economy and democracy deteriorate.
In a communiqué signed by President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC highlighted the dire security situation, stating that “almost 700,000 lives lost in just a year to insecurity in Nigeria can only happen in nations at war.” They also warned of impending famine due to farmers’ inability to access their lands.
The Congress strongly condemned the government’s perceived failure to protect lives and property, demanding immediate and decisive action.

“The time for talk shops and promises has passed; what is needed now are actions,” it warned.
NLC urged the government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity. The NLC wants security agencies to deal decisively and mercilessly with criminals, specifically naming armed herders and bandits.
“The contradictions of Nigeria’s political economy have deepened the precarious state of working people and further exposed the fragility of the social contract. At this point, Nigerians are feeling deeply abandoned,” it added.
