Nnamdi Kanu vs FG: Case Adjourned Indefinitely

The case between the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and the Nigerian government has been adjourned indefinitely after proceedings failed to hold as scheduled.

Lawyers, family members, and supporters of Kanu gathered at the Federal High Court in Abuja for the hearing on charges including terrorism and treason.

Kanu himself was present and reiterated his opposition to the presiding judge, Justice Binta Murtala Nyako, calling once again for her to recuse herself from the trial.

Kanu’s trial had been on hold after he requested that Justice Nyako recused herself, citing a lack of confidence in her ability to preside over the case. However, in September 2024, following Kanu’s oral application, the judge had stepped down, but the Chief Judge later referred the case back to her, stating that Kanu’s request needed to be formalised through a motion.

In December 2024, prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, formally requested that the trial proceed, while Kanu’s defense counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, objected, arguing that the recusal stood valid and calling for the case to be moved to a different court.

Solomon Awomolo a Senior Advocate of Nigeria leads the prosecuting team while the defence team of Nnamdi Kanu is led by Aloy Ezimakor.
