The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied reports claiming it has released a timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, describing the information as false and misleading.

INEC, in a statement on Friday, signed by its spokesperson, Adedayo Oketola, said it had not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.

The commission said it operates strictly within the provisions of the law, noting that Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, requires the Commission to publish a notice of election no later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.

“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,”  INEC  stated.

The electoral body also assured Nigerians that an official timetable would be released at the appropriate time, in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.

“When released, it will be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels,” it added.

The Commission urges the public and the media to disregard fake reports and to rely on information from INEC’s official platforms for accurate, authoritative updates.

Meanwhile, in his New Year message on Friday, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027, noting that early preparations were already underway to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

He described the year ahead as a period for fresh beginnings and an essential phase for reinforcing institutional structures ahead of the next general elections.

Reflecting on the Commission’s activities in 2025, the INEC chairman commended staff for their dedication, highlighting the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office on October 23.
