Nigeria’s National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced updated guidelines regarding the recital of the national anthem, according to a statement released on Thursday, October 16.
“Recite/sing only the first stanza (not all three (3) stanzas) at official events,” the statement reads.
“The third stanza should be recited as the national prayer at the beginning of an event.
“The three stanzas are to be recited/sung only during Independence Day, Inauguration (swearing-in) of a President, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy (June 12) Day, Inauguration of the National Assembly, etc.
“The National Pledge is to be recited at the end of an event.”
In May of last year, President Bola Tinubu signed legislation that reinstated the former anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee.’ This anthem replaced the song that had been in use since 1978, known as ‘Arise, O Compatriots.’
The decision to change the anthem faced significant public backlash, but Tinubu maintained that the reintroduced national anthem emphasises dedication to the country.
