North Korea’s citizens cast their votes Sunday for delegates to the country’s rubber-stamp legislature, state media reported, with authorities claiming turnout at nearly 100 percent.
The election for the Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) follows a major five-yearly gathering of the ruling party, which sets state policy on issues from diplomacy to military planning.
The central election committee, quoted by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), said: “As of 18:00 (Sunday), voting was ended at all constituencies across the country and 99.99 percent of the electors registered on the voter rolls attended it.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un voted at a coal mine in the Sunchon area north of Pyongyang, delivering a speech and taking photos with miners, KCNA reported.
Attention now turns to the SPA’s upcoming session, where it is expected that Kim could be named president, the top state position once held by his late grandfather, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung.
