North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine, emphasising the importance of enhancing the country’s naval capabilities as part of its defence strategy.

According to state media, Kim visited shipyards focused on building warships, where he was briefed on the progress of a nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine.

This move follows previous reports in 2023 regarding the launch of North Korea’s first “tactical nuclear attack submarine,” although its operational status was uncertain.

Experts estimate North Korea possesses 64 and 86 submarines, though many are likely outdated and non-operational.
